I found this serial backpack kit http://www.wulfden.org/k107/index.shtml and I want to know if I can use it with LCD Smartie. I want to use it with this 4 X 20 LCD I bought off of eBay

I just had a quick look at the command set. I don't know much about this backpack, but it may be possible to get it to work by using Smartie's "test driver" that allows you to define the command set that drives the LCD backpack.
I think Smartie can only natively drive CrystalFontz, Matrix Orbital, Imon, IRtrans and Seetron LCDs and controllers.
Seetron is a basic backpack available as a kit (I think). The others tend to be complete LCD modules with built-in controller.
Several members of this forum have designed their own backpacks using PIC and Atmel microcontrollers - this is only for those comfortable with a soldering iron and programming microcontrollers. Search the hardware forum for controller, backpack etc.

Most of serial back packs are compatible with LCD Smartie.
Of course you have to try the drivers and the settings to find which one fits to your PCB.
In addition you can try to mod the test driver. But keep in mind that the test driver is available on the last final release (not in the beta).
