I bought a 2x16 chars display, named DEM16216 with 14+2 pins, like in your schematic. First line on display is on permanently, when i powered the lcd, but nothing appears when I start LCD smartie. I selected the Parallel mode, i selected 2x16, but..... I followed exactly the schematic found on net.... Why does not work? I use win xp sp2. I installed port95gt.
I also see the datasheet of my display, and the configuration of pins is identicaly like in the schematic i used to. Can anyone help me??

Do you have more then one parallel port? Did you ground the R/W pin? Have you triple checked your wiring? Try looking here and see if you have done the same thing as on the site. If all else fails, desolder and do it all again using that guide.

Glad I could help! Just for the sake of everyone else here are some of my debug tips for LCDs:
If you get smoke or it smells like it's burnt:
Throw it in the bin, you have destroyed it
Make sure it isn't the smell of solder
If you get the black line/s but cannot send data:
Make sure that the E, RS and R/W are wired correctly
Try another piece of software
If you are getting garbage on the screen:
Make sure D0-D7 are wired correctly
Try another piece of software
Make sure you are running only one copy of Smartie
If all else fails:
Completely desolder and try again
