Here is a site I found that has details on a USB to LCD and serial to LCD with complete source that may be of interest to others. Matrix Orbital compatible. The serial one (MO-LCD) does not have buttons but the USB one does. It looks like it wouldn't be too hard to hack the code to get a serial version with buttons. Want to put the lcd/keypad a long way from the computer so serial seems the way to go. Just haven't gotten too far with it yet...

I wasn't able to find David Potter's code that is referenced as the starting point. I think it was done a long time ago.
