If you have a parallel port (even if it has your LCD connected to it), you can use the "buttons" plugin here: http://forums.lcdsmartie.org/viewtopic.php?t=876

The buttons plugin works in a similar way to the buttons function built into Smartie, but you have to use the DLL function (see examples in buttons plugin thread) to read the button state instead of the $MObutton command.

Have you at least read a few post in the thread mattcro suggested?

There are schematics over there that explain how to connect the buttons to the parallel port. (2 to 15 buttons even)
