VFD not working under Vista x64

Post by RhinoDude »

First, I would like to say that I've thoroughly searched this topic and tried various paths (seetron, winring0, etc.) and am still stuck. So please no posts saying that I haven't done my research. ;-)

Background:

I have a silverstone LC03V case. I want to get the VFD to work. I need to run an x64 OS as I have 8gb ram. My motherboard does not have a parallel port. I have installed a startech paraellel PCI port which is recognized and has a "functioning" LPT1 port with assigned ranges:
CC00-CC07 and C880-C887

I have downloaded the latest smartie, downloaded winring0, downloaded the inpout stubs. I have extracted the dll and sys files from winring0 into lcd smartie install directory, and also overlaid the inpout32 files with the stubs.

Restarted lcd smartie, and configured plugin for hd44780.dll, port as simply "LPT1", and LCD as 2x16. I left the scroll interval as 300 as according to Silverstone docs that is correct.

I never see anything on the VFD.

Should the port be something other than simply "LPT1"?

I also downloaded latest iMon as per silverstone's tech supports suggestion, and nothing ever shows with that either.

Any idea what I am missing or doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hmm...quite a few views; no replies. Not a good sign for getting this working. ;-)

If I dumped Vista and went with XP x64 would I have any better luck getting LCD Smartie to drive a VFD via PCI-based parallel port? I know I can't use port95nt either way as it's not 64-bit...

Thanks,
- Rhino

@RhinoDude You should try CC00 or C880 instead of LPT1 before changing the OS.

@limbo the link you provided got messed up somehow, please edit it.

You rock Caesar!

Suh-weeeeet! Got it working by changing port to "$CC00".

You da man! Thanks a TON!

FYI, the information posted in another thread here about the inpout32 x64 wrapper of winring0 only working if you have a motherboard parallel port is INCORRECT. That may in fact be true if you leave the port as LPT1, but if you change the port to the second address range used by the PCI card, the indeed you CAN get x64 Vista LCD Smartie to work with PCI Parallel port!

The card I'm using in question is the Startech PCI1PECP

I know that this is old, but it gives some information regarding setup and is pertanent to My Situation!

Here is the documentation, but PORT95 does not work (on Windows 64). Does Smartie 5.4 work on Parrel Ports?

Right now I have
Display Plugin HD44780.dll
Startup Params PORT[LPT1]
LCD Size 2x16

Unfortunately it does not seem to work. I even tried PORT=LPT1, PORT[$CC00], PORT=$CC00
