This one worth getting?

Post by w0lv3r1n3 »

saw this just now on ebay and looks very interesting to me..
Question is, how hard would it be to get it working?
I'm fairly new to all this, however have some knowlege
of electronics and have built-modded computers for years..
That and i love lcd's.. thanx

Hard, unless you have alot of electronics and software development experience. You would need a microcontroller to convert ascii based strings (from smarite) to graphic dot matrix type letters. There is a project on here where someone (Ceasar) used a graphic display with smartie.

It is the hardest and most expensive solution to get that baby going, practically you'll have to build the equivalent of a video card from a computer.
That display needs a dedicated processor and video memory. 8KB memory should be enough but the processor is the hard part, you'll need much skill to solder that kind, not to mention the ability to make at least double sided PCB's.

Also the price is at least two times higher than what those devices should cost.
