Bright control of VFD

Hi everybody!
Is there any way to control the brightness o a VFD (noritake CU16025F) the datasheet says "Brightness Set: R/W= L, RS= H, D0-D7=00H-03H" any suggestion?.
Note:I'm better in electronics than in programming so if it is too hard i'll adapt the Lcd BL control to handle the voltage of the onboard inverter! :wink:
I'll post the result if it works!
