USB FTDI SerLCD

Post by CodyTaylor »

I have read through the Simply LCD USB connect based on FTDI chip thread, but was unable to understand enough to resolve my problem.

I am trying to use the Sparkfun FT232RL USB to Serial breakout board with the Sparkfun Serial Enabled 16x2 LCD.

From what I understand this setup might be redundant, but I would like to make it work if at all possible.
I have tried using both the FTDI_LCD.dll, and the SparkFunLCD.dll, but am still unable to make any text appear on screen.

I appreciate any guidance.

Does your system recognize the device as hardware under device manager?
Are you sure the the LCD is correct one? As far I can tell the Breakout Board for FT232RL USB to Serial can be connected to LCD without any other hardware. In your LCD there is an tine backpack on LCD as well. Can you lease check it with Sparkfun?

The LCD is a 16x2 HD44780 and it is recognized by device manager, but nothing shows up on the LCD. The backlight turns on, but that is all.

I think my problem might be trying to use the FTDI chip in addition to the backpack on the LCD. Is this redundant?

you have two ways to do this, you can use the ftdi as a usb->serial and then use the serial backpack for the lcd. in this case you should use the matrix orbital driver (it's the most common, start with it). and select the com port of the ftdi chip. so it will work this way: LCDSMARTIE--->FTDI--->serial backpack--->lcd.

but you don't need the serial backpack because the ftdi chip also has a parallel (bit bang mode) output; you just have to connect the ftdi module directly to the lcd in the way it's indicated in the other post, and plug it in, in lcdsmartie you should load the ftdi driver and it should work. that's all. LCDSMARTIE--->FTDI--->lcd.

Thanks for your help, Lucas. Just because I already had it configured in that way, I went ahead and gave the LCD Smartie -> FTDI -> Serial Backpack -> LCD configuration another shot. I used the martix driver at 9600 baud. The first time I turned it on in this configuration, the LCD faintly showed seemingly random characters. I disconnected my set-up and tried a few different baud rates, but was never able to get text back on the LCD. -not even the jibberish I got before. Because the matrix driver doesn't require much configuration, I'm not sure what else I should tweak. Any suggestions?

you should try the direct ftdi connection. it's simpler. it uses less components and should work immediately without configurations.. i have it working right now in my desk (i made a custom pcb, you can see it here, but it's the same IC you have)
