This sounds like a bug that was resolved with Smartie beta 5.4.1 - the previous version would try to open the port twice on wake-up and the 2nd attempt would fail. See http://lcdsmartie.sourceforge.net/smartied.htm

If you're already using that version, it could be an issue with the USB-Serial converter wake-up/resume. Maybe it doesn't initialize quick enough for Smartie... I don't know.
