Buttons using $MObutton(X) - replicate keyboard keys?

It sounds simple but alas elluding me.

Basically using a Matrix Orbital VK204-24-USB with LCD Smartie and I have the push buttons hooked up to the VFD. LCD Smartie sees the buttons and I can use them to do other commands via the $MObutton() option, like freeze/unfreeze the screen.

I apolagize if this has been asked before, looked around and looked through documentation but couldn't find much on it.

Is this possible? Plugin available that does it?

Basically want to be able to use the push buttons through the VFD and LCD smartie to send keys to programs like Beyond Media for DVD control, FF, RW, Play, Puase etc...
