Unfortunately for software like Smartie, things are a lot more locked down in Vista64, so there is no 64bit equivalent for port95nt (AFAIK). Microsoft obviously don't expect people to be using the printer port for something it wasn't really intended for, let alone its intended use - it seems that they are dropping support for the LPT port in favour of USB.
So, you have a few options for connecting an LCD. If you have a standard HD44780 type LCD (most alphanumeric LCDs), you can use one of the circuits described in the hardware section to connect your LCD to the serial or USB ports. You will need reasonable soldering skills for these, and microcontroller programming stuff (AVR or PIC) for the serial port method.
The simplest solution appears to be Nick's USB adapter curcuit based around a low-cost module. This is almost guaranteed to work for a few years yet, unlike the parallel and serial ports which are disappearing.
