Cant get display to start via LCD smartie.

Post by Skattesnylter »

I bought a Cooltek 4x20 LCD display from a norwegian website. Unfortunately, this comes with a parallell port connection, seeing that i have a new system where the IE1224 port is "obsolete" i had to buy a USB to IE1224 adapter (push the USB DONGLE 1P link)

My problem is now, how to i get this to fire up properly? Do i need any special drivers or dll files since the IE1224 has to go through a USB. (this dongle shows as an USB printer device on my device manager.)

Any input is appreciated as i really want to get this working. Ive tried the settings already available in LCD smartie and ive set the display to correct lines/characters.

You may be out of luck with this USB printer adapter. Several other people have tried to use a USP->Parallel adapter (USB-IEE1284) for LCDs but it did not work. Usually, these adapters do not provide the complete parallel port functions, they only allow Windows to print to a parallel port printer. LCD Smartie requires a real parallel port (LPT port).

For desktop PCs with no printer port built in (on the motherboard), You need to add a parallel port PCI card, and find the correct address for it. There are several posts about this - like http://forums.lcdsmartie.org/viewtopic.php?t=1386

If you're into electronics, there are several microcontroller projects for connecting LCDs to serial and USB ports - search the forum for PIC, AVR, USB etc.
