Reading inputs from the parallel port

Post by Catherine »

Is it possible to use some of the unused lines on the parallel port and have Smartie read them? It would be nice to use pushbuttons to control what's on the display, eg. volume up/down, next screen/back, etc.
If I remember correctly, there are at least three input lines available, and a couple of outputs too. This means that the port could read from three to eight buttons, depending on whether hardware decoding is done or not.
Has anybody any suggestions or pointers on this?
I can build the hardware for this, but the software - I wouldn't know where to start.

Sorry if this has been addressed elsewhere, I've looked around this forum, but the couple of posts I've seen suggest that hooking buttons up to the COM port is the way to go. I want to be awkward, and use the par port, seeing as I've already got stuff hooked up there
