It looks like it will work fine with Smartie, as it seems to be a standard type of LCD. This is the HD44780 display type in LCD Smartie.

I found two datasheets for ATM1602B (the photos are a big help!). I guess this is the LCD?

The link you gave doesn't work because it points to a file on your own computer. For others to see the file it must be uploaded to the internet, for example a file-sharing site. You can't attach a file on this forum.

For wiring the LCD to your LPT port, you should use the first circuit on this page:
http://lcdsmartie.sourceforge.net/circuits.htm

A good method is to use an old printer cable. De-solder the big printer connector (leave the 25-way connector on) and solder the wires to the LCD. You need to figure out which wires are which in the cable, but it's a cheap and tidy way of making the connections.

On the circuit diagram, the "10K" symbol is a 10 kilo-ohm variable resistor that controls the display contrast. The "100" symbol is a 100 ohm variable resistor that sets the backlight brightness.

There are several guides on the internet that show you step-by-step how to do the wiring (soldering etc). I don't have any bookmarks, but you can do a search for LCD wiring guide.
