Lucky 4x40 owners like myself
I noticed that pin 17 on the x by 20 displays is used for the backlight, however for us bigger than 20 character displays use 17 as enable2 so I was wondering I noticed that pin 15 goes unused in all schematics, would it be possible to have lcd smartie use that pin for the backlight pin on the lcd's that use use 17 for enable2, I mean it would be nice to allow software control of the backlight on those lcd's that are bigger than 20 characters.

Unfortunately, pin 15 on the LPT port is an input to the PC.
There aren't any spare output pins when using a 4x40 LCD, so no chance of software backlight control unless you do some clever multiplexing/latching, or only use 4-bit mode, or don't use the R/W control (ie have the LCD in write-only mode).
I suppose that's why there isn't already backlight control in the 4x40 schematic.
