parallel port on PCI card

Post by vapochilled »

Hi guys, I hate doing this( I run a forum/website) but my first post is a problem one
I build HTPCs and mainly use Ahanix cases which come with a parallel driven display, I was using smartie without issue for ages before the motherboard died, now the mobo I fitted does not have legacy ports so I installed a pci parallel card, it's all installed ok, and works ok with other stuff, but I can't get smartie or more accurately the display to work, any idea's?

K, 2.14am here, been at this for ours and discovered that I needed to set the port in smartie to 9000? go figure, I think it's the way the PCI card operates, anyway, all working now.
Oh btw, the new smartie rocks!! keep up the excellent work guys, it is much appreciated :D

Hi vapochilled,

My parallel port is on a PCI card too. I put in Smartie configuration the i/o address (A000) that I found in the MS Windows system parameters.

I have no result on my LCD.
But when I set up the Winamp LCD plugin I have no problem, all work fine.
In your post, you specify a value that I don't understand : 9000. How do you guess/calculate this number ?

Thanks in advance.

it literaly was a guess, I seem to remember that the card defaulted to a value close to 9000, so I just started pumping in numbers and trying it.
I'm sure there is a more correct way to find this number, but I don't know it.

Oki, I continue to search.
Can you please if you don't, take a look at the i/o address value of your card (like the screenshot in my post : Configuration panel->System->Hardware->Hardware manager->[your card]->(right click) Properties->Ressources) ? I think the '9000' should come from here.
I try to make more tests whith others LCD software but port choice is often limited to 0x278 or 0x378 :(

maybe 9000 is the resource address (2328 in hex)

anyway, cheers for the advice, i've been strugglig for about a week and in that time my LCD was a very expensive power light!

Yes, it's right for me too. The lpt card address can be read in the system properties. A000 on my PC, 9000 for Vapochilled (it's in hex).

Just one note in my experience, I did my first tests with Smartie 5.1 and it didn't work. Yet, since I tried with the 5.3.2 version, it work fine (with the same configuration parameters).

Thanks to Vapochilled for answers and hope this will help.

Hi,

Since the address for your parallel port on the PCI card is 6C00,
you would just have to set up Smartie with this one and your display should work. Keep me aware...

Hi again.

Thanks, now ive got text showing up at my display, but i still got some problems. From time to time, there is a glitch when the display refreshes as the text scroll (double letters, strange signs etc.) So therefore im wondering if there is anything i can do to fix this?

Make sure your wiring and solder point are good.

I bought the lcd pre-soldered and wired up, so that shouldnt be the problem.

Well i've atleast got it to function now, to a cerain degree that is. Is it possible to use a hotmail account in the pre-made screen that shows new mails? If i remember correctly hotmail doesent use POP3, but it doesent hurt to ask...

Im gonna take a look at all those nifty plugins now, this really is great!

And guys; thanks for all the help so far!

hotmail use http to retrieve email so i doubt it would work using the pop3 feature unless you have an upgraded hotmail account.

ok, thanks...

Im fiddling with the thought of mounting the display in a box that withs my floppy-bay, so i can take it out and place it on my desk. Im therefore interested if its possible to split the single parallel-plug ive got now into two seperate kables carrying the same signal over the same port. I could then simply disconnect the parallel- and power-cable, and rewire it outside the case. Is this possible?

what you can do is wire to the inner pins that connect the parallel port to the motherboard and use it inside the computer to the floppy bay.
