Comfile Technology CVFD-216 D09003
It uses the serial port for data or I2C. It has 14 pins at the VFD so it may be HD44780 Compatable without the serial thing but it does not say if it is or not so I don't know and it also does not mention the pinout of the VFD.

Difficult to be sure, but I would think it's HD44780 compatible if you remove the serial controller board. You may even be able to use the display with the serial board if you can set up the "test driver" in Smartie. There are several posts about using this driver, which allows you to specify the commands to use for non-standard LCD/VFD modules and controllers.
